Hull monitoring + anti fouling solution
presented at SMM Hamburg 23.-26.09.2008

HISMAR (Hull Identification System for Marine Autonomous Robotics) is a multifunctional robotic platform for specific inspection or maintenance tasks such as structural integrity monitoring of the ship’s hull or cleaning operations.  During the last 3 years such a robot HISMAR has been developed by a practically oriented team within an EU-funded project.

The central module of HISMAR is an innovative system for identification and navigation using optical and magnetic recognition systems.  HISMAR supports offering a complete survey and documentation (monitoring) of hull conditions as well as cleaning of a ship’s hull using a water jet system.

Fouling on ships hull has some negative results: fuel consumption raises (and effects more CO2-emissions), there is the risk of transportation of non-indigenous marine species, cleaning in the dry dock needs expensive idle time. Even up to date new coatings often give no optimal protection. Mechanical cleaning by a robot during ordinary unlading time means new advantages in efficiency.

The high standard of recognition and orientation of this system allows it to split monitoring activities as well as cleaning process into single phases following the planned unlading periods in the harbours. This means high flexibility in combination of maintenance and transports.

Detailed information about the project will be available at SMM. We hope to meet you there. HISMAR is presented at the stand of our project partners
